Hallo

Heyo- I'm spending the first semester of my junior year in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I never thought I would venture into the blogger world, but I've realized that it's probably the best way to share my experiences, and eventually remember them myself. Also, I can now call myself a blogger, which unfortunately sounds like a species of toad. Hm. Anyhow, happy summer and Merry Christmas and feliz dia de los amigos to all...

algo y algo

Tonight was excellent. I am tired and should really be sleeping right now, but the evening's activities definitely merit some record. My friend Miranda's cousin is Argentine, and oh so kindly invited us to his friends' weekly salsa lesson. Yes, he and his friends hired a salsa teacher for an hour&a half every Friday night. so. sick. It's only 15 pesos each, which is about $4. They have been doing this for a year, and as soon as the turns and "sombreros" and other wondrously named moves ("hija y madre", "hija y madre y perro", "some thing that made people jump up and yell eee") started, the teacher oh so intelligently took me and two of the 4 other Americans there off to the side for remedial lessons. Needless to say, I love me some salsa. My Pulso experience sadly did not translate tonight.
We stayed after the class and hung out, helping people get ready for a party. By hung out I mean talked amongst ourselves because it was intimidating to be in the throes of a group of people who have known each other since the womb days or so. As the night went on, we branched out a bit.

The house we were in was incredible. From the outside, it is a plain iron door in the midst of a sprawling cement wall...on the inside, it's an aesthetically pleasing and artistic abode. The art varied from home painted masterpieces of a sort to a bag of miscellaneous and ridiculous and beauty-ous hats. It encompasses a dance studio, a loft, a patio, a fireplace, did I mention the hats?! Point is, I got some great local traveling recommendations, we traded important cultural inforgraphics such as leisure activities to consume one's liquid of choice, otherwise referred to as drinking games, the living situations (dorm v. living at home), and good places to listen to live music. Also, I was informed that UBA Filosofia y Letras is a school of "drogadictos". Lovely!

This weekend, start honework, talk to Papito on skype (SO EXCITED-O!), visit the San Telmo feria, and on Sunday Elvira is having a late bday party with her entire family. She's making lentil soup which made me think of Ginny and how much I miss home(s) in general. Good thing this place is chaotically distracting because I miss everything so much! Specifically, people and peanut butter. Ciao for now.
